Equality

Saturday, June 16th, 2018

I commit to supporting legislation that levels the playing field and ensures fairness, equality, respect, and opportunity for women,  minorities, the LGBTQ community, and immigrants.

Women

It’s critical to ensure every woman has control over her health and reproductive decisions and access to quality healthcare. I will fight the Trump administration’s attacks on Title X, which provides low-income women (and some men) access to family planning services. The endless appetite to attack Planned Parenthood must end.

Equal pay must also be ensured for women. It is a damning indictment of our political enterprise that equal pay for women is an issue in 2018. Both my daughters should expect to earn the same amount as any man, but today they’ll get 83 cents for every $1. This is utterly wrong and must change. I will fight tirelessly in Congress to pass equitable pay legislation.

LGBTQ

While the US has made remarkable strides on LGBTQ rights, there is still much to do to fight discrimination. I will sponsor the Equality Act and the Every Child Deserves a Family Act to ban discrimination in employment, housing, credit, education, public programs, and adoption. It is outrageous that in 2018 someone can be fired from their job because of someone they love. I would also support health insurance protections for LGBTQ people to ensure no discrimination by healthcare providers.

Minorities

We must value the diversity of our country and ensure all people are provided with opportunity, and not treated adversely because of their ethnicity, background, skin color, or other differences.

Any person who wants to go to school, find a job, and earn an income should have the opportunity to do so – regardless of race, income, disability, or identity. I will support policies that provide pathways to opportunities and reverse laws serving as discriminatory roadblocks.

The War on Drugs is a war on people with Latinos and African Americans disproportionately incarcerated at higher rates. I will fight to end racial profiling, reverse mandatory minimum sentencing, ban for profit prisons, demilitarize the police, and revamp police academies and training.

Immigrants

Equality is broken in America

As the son of an immigrant, this issue is personal. Broken immigration laws and fear-based politics have left immigrants to our country stranded and vulnerable. Congress has dragged its feet for far too long. We’ve made promises to Dreamers and it’s not only right but it’s also our moral obligation to fulfill those promises. As a US Representative, I will support proposals that:

  • Fight harsh deportation and detention policies;
  • Expand Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA);
  • Provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants looking to better their lives;
  • Reform our current immigration and visa system; and
  • Fight unfair criminalization of immigrants.
